I am writing a book for the Lakehead Transportation Museum on the history of shipbuilding at the Lakehead (aka Thunder Bay, Ont.) I found your site searching for information about the Scotty Gale and L.A. Learmonth. I was intrigued to learn that these two barges were built for the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1968. At least two others were also built for HBC but their names make them harder to find in an Internet search: HBC 1001 built in 1972 and HBC 1002 in 1975. I’m sure readers would be interested to know, as am I, that the Company was still purchasing vessels in the second half of the twentieth century and for what purpose, and a bit about the history of the men the two were named for. Was HBC using the barges to supply stores, perhaps on the Mackenzie River, at this late date?
I’ve checked the box so that I’m notified when there are replies to my comment, or you could email me directly at byurkoski@gmail.com
Barbara Yurkoski
Barb CJYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02499514859479502366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781105588493398130.post-37340836263177488272022-10-21T20:41:56.901+01:002022-10-21T20:41:56.901+01:00Barb CJY. Anyway, I hope you come back to this comment and read this. Yes I do know all about the Barges built to honour both men. If fact, my good friend George Duddy who helped me in finding more about Scotty Gall, hence this blog, has just had a book published that details these two barges. It is called "Called by the North" by Gorge Duddy. go to link here https://tinyurl.com/yckwut7f at Heritage Books.Iain Cameronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11397274617360739298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781105588493398130.post-74764808222857097552022-10-21T03:47:26.367+01:002022-10-21T03:47:26.367+01:00Interesting story with lots of detail.
